Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega visited Pennsbury High School students Friday.

The voice behind hit songs “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner” visited ninth grade English honors students at the Falls Township high school to discuss the writing process and her inspirations.

As part of teacher Breanne Cook’s class, students read Vega’s poem “Calypso” and listened to her song version of the poem. They became hooked on her eclectic style and wrote letters about Vega’s impact on their class.

Cook sent the letters to Vega’s Facebook page and the musicians asked if she could come meet with the students, which ended up happening this week.

On Friday, Vega spoke with the students and performed some of her best-known songs.

Due to the students’ interest, Cook created a mini-unit titled “Inspiration and the Writing Process: The Works of Suzanne Vega.”
