Bristol Township is asking for federal block grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to fix up some local playgrounds and parks.
Bristol Township plans to apply for $607,723 in federal dollars from the Community Development Block Grant program. The money will be in addition to $371,187 left over from the current fiscal year, leaving $978,910 in funds.

Bristol Township Community Development Administrator Tom McDermott said the township will submit their grant application in mid-June and is currently accepting public comment.
Residents have long complained about the township’s playgrounds over the years. Deputy Township Manager Randee Elton said Parks and Recreation Director Jessica Fox has heard requests from residents and that led to the planned improvements.
A list of parks that the township hopes to update:
- Hazel Playground at 1920 Hazel Avenue – New play structure, swings, safety surface, basketball courts, security cameras, and trash and recycling receptacles – $68,000
- Hilltop Avenue Park at 3105 Hilltop Avenue – New play structure, swings, fencing, and trash and recycling receptacles – $48,000

The township plans to put some of the funds to help pay for the soon-to-be-developed Cedar Avenue Park in the Croydon section.
Community Development Block Grant program funding is based on a formula that takes into account numerous factors and depends on congressional appropriations, McDermott said.
