The event is the Middletown-based Woods Services signature event for the year, explained Communications Manager Katie Carnevale.

“It really is a true group effort to pull off an event of this magnitude,” Carnevale said.

About 75 volunteers worked to bring the event together. Different department of nonprofit Woods Services itself, such as the maintenance, grounds and communications crews, came together to pull the run off.

“It’s exciting and rewarding,” said Vice President of Communications Cheryl Kauffman.

Nearly 1,100 participants registered to take part in the 5K race or the one mile walk. About 300 Woods Services residents, 100 staff members, and about 600 members of the community participated in the fundraising effort. The organization also put on a fitness fair, an awards ceremony, and a donated lunch for participants.

“I feel like this is an event where there is something for everyone,” Carnevale said.

Before the race began, Woods Services CEOย Tine Hansen-Turton presented Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick with the 2018 Woods Services Humanitarian Award because of his work to stop changes to the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. Changes, Woods Services say, would have hurt residents of the organization.

Patrick Scotto, 21, acted as the client speaker before the race began.

“I am very thankful to my family and to Woods for helping me along the way,” Scotto said.
