The crash happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on State Road right outside the fire station in Bristol Township’s Croydon section.

Fire Chief Tom Tryon said the battalion chief was responding to the station to help get a fire truck to a kitchen fire scene when a van turned. The battalion chief tried to avoid the van and slammed into the pole head-on. The pole snapped and electrical equipment caught fire, smoldering for more than an hour.

The battalion chief suffered some injuries to his face but was not badly hurt, Tryon said.
