The official start to the holiday season happened on Friday night as hundreds of Bristol Borough residents and visitors packed in to see the borough’s Christmas tree lit up.

In addition to the tree at the base of Mill Street, reindeer visited, Santa Claus stopped by to visit with kids and the shops in the central business district were participating in the festivities.

Before the lighting of the tree, members of the Bristol Riverside Theater took to the stage to delight the crowd in carols and traditional holiday music.

Thousands of people moved around Bristol’s central business district taking part in the festivities and stopping in local businesses.

“I think that we are starting to compete with New York and Philadelphia in terms of crowd size,” joked Ralph DiGuiseppe II, the president of council, before introducing District Attorney Matt Weintraub.

Weintraub joined a number of special guests for the evening, ย including State Rep. John Galloway.

The tree lighting will be followed by Saturday’s Christmas parade through the borough.
