As noted in new data from the state’s Department of Education, Pennsylvania public school teachers are grossing a higher average full-time salary than the many Pennsylvania households.
While state government employees who work under the governor’s purview on average make $53,837 and the median state household income is $53,599, the statewide public school teacher average salary is $60,186, according to data from the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
The Council Rock School District has the second highest average teacher salary in the state. Its 716 teachers with an average of 16.4 years of experience have an average salary of $96,116.

The Neshaminy School District with 521 teachers with an average 17.1 years of experience earn an average of $90,509 annually.
While Bristol Borough School District’s 82 teachers with an average 15.2 years of experience round out the state’s top eight with an average salary of $90,142.

According to the Department of Education report, the Bristol Township School District, with an average salary of $86,348, comes in at spot 19.
The 26th highest slot is taken by Bucks County Technical High School with a $84,651 average salary.
Although Pennsbury didn’t even make the top 50, teachers received an average salary a little over $75,000.

It’s notable by the report that much of the school districts that pay their teachers the most are in suburban areas surrounding Philadelphia, as with other counties accounted for the state’s average full-time public school teacher salary is just over $60,000. Years of experience do not appear to be a factor as Wilkinsburg Borough School District in Allegheny County has demonstrated. That district, with the highest average years of experience among school districts in the state, has an average teacher salary just $6,000 above the statewide average.
According to a report from earlier 2017 by Education Week, although Pennsylvania teacher salaries seem high, the state’s average annual salary for a full-time public school teacher doesn’t even break the top 10 country-wide. Alaska, coming in at nearly $78,000, pays their teachers the most, with New York, Connecticut, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Maryland, Illinois, and Virginia falling right behind. Southern and Midwest states tend to pay their teachers less, with Mississippi teachers faring the worst in the country at just $42,000 annually.
