The teachers of the region’s 17 Catholic high schools, including Conwell-Egan in Bristol Township, have agreed to a new contract.
The one-year deal between the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Association of Catholic Teachers Local 1776 will allow for a pay bump, more professional development time and additional time for education.

The 600 teachers that are part of the union will see a $1,200 salary increase and no jump in health care contributions they make.
The new contract will add two professional development days during the school year and two before, extend the workday by 15 minutes next year and add new opportunities for coaching and mentoring teachers.
Unionized Catholic high school teachers with a bachelor’s degree and 20 years of service under their belt make $54,000 per year. Under the new deal, the starting salary for new teachers will jump from $38,000 to $39,000 per year.

“The Office of Catholic Education is pleased that the general membership of ACT ratified the contract. It stands as a testimonial to academic excellence as well as the partnership of teachers, administrators, parents, and students it seeks to represent. It is the agreement we had hoped to obtain for the current and future benefit of everyone,” a statement from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia said.
The contract agreement came at the perfect time as students begin arriving Wednesday in phases. The entire high school body will be in attendance Friday.
