A future resident of Bristol Township’s Croydon section and her family broke ground on their new home under rainy conditions Tuesday

Heather Getz said she was thrilled to break ground on her family’s soon-to-be-under-construction rancher at 1726 Prospect Avenue in Croydon. The three-bedroom and one-and-a-half bathroom home is being constructed as the 107th home built by volunteers from Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County.

“Being a single mother, I didn’t think it was possible to get a house,” said Gretz, who has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in the past.

Getz, who currently lives in a rented two-bedroom apartment in Bensalem, will move into the new home in several months with her 16-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter and their dog.

The new home that Getz and her family will contribute time to build will help make homeownership possible for the family.

Getz explained that her high rent means her funds are limited once you factor in water service and trash removal.

“Now if we pay for anything it’s going to be ours,” Getz  said, adding her kids will now have their own rooms.

“We are always thrilled to be part of a family’s journey to homeownership, but it is difficult to find an empty lot in Bucks County,” said Florence Kawoczka, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County. “Therefore this groundbreaking is extra special; we will be able to build a brand new, energy efficient home in a lovely, well established neighborhood.”

The lot where the Getz’s new home will be built has been empty for several years.

According to Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County officials, Getz took part in the nonprofit’s “Almost Home” program, which helps residents with financial obstacles remain in stable housing.

The home will be built with support from Bank of America, Dumack Engineering, Penn Color, the Bucks County Foundation, Leff Family Foundation and Sykes Enterprises.
