Employee-Owned Company Looks To Hire Local Residents

After a 29-year career in the Navy that took him around the world, Bristol Township resident Dave Devanzo was looking for his next challenge to tackle.

Devanzo served his country and gained invaluable skills as an aviation mechanic and command master chief on a destroyer. The skills Devanzo possessed were perfect for an open position at Modern Group, a Bristol-based company that sells and services industrial equipment from forklifts and construction equipment to generators and warehouse products.

Devanzo started at the company, which is one of Bristol Township’s largest employers, as a forklift technician in 2012 and quickly rose to become a branch manager who oversees more than two dozen technicians employees.

“Everything I did in the Navy was a bit of what happens here,” he said from his Modern Group office recently. “As a technician and dispatcher I got the best of both worlds; I got my feet wet working directly with customers.

Day-to-day, Devanzo works with his crew and helps them prioritize what tasks they need to accomplish before the day ends and deals with Modern Group’s loyal customers. He also provides assistance to technicians and helps train new team members.

Devanzo is part of a team of 265 people who work between Modern Group’s Bristol Township campus and their several other facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Over the coming months, Modern Group is looking to hire additional staff for its many divisions, including technicians for industrial generators, heavy construction equipment and forklifts.

Modern Group has been around for 70 years and is growing.

The company is 100 percent employee owned and all new employees will be vested within three years. In addition, the company offers a 401K program and generous pay and benefits to employees, according to Marnie Bean, Modern Group’s senior human resources specialist.

“First and foremost – we’re an employee owned company that is like a family. We share in the successes and that creates a better work environment,” Modern Group Director of Marketing Greg Plefka said.

Modern Group offers extensive employee training and growth programs for incoming employees, or “prospective owners” as Devanzo calls them.

For Devanzo, the setup of the company reminds him of the Navy where everyone was working toward one goal.

“Really no one is more important than the guy with the wrench out in the cold and heat,” he said.

Many of Modern Group’s employees have been with the company for more than 40 years. However in recent years the company has seen a growth in applications from young professionals wanting to grow their career at a company that shares their values, Plefka said.
