The Penndel apartment complex that operated as dorms for Langhorne Manor-based Cairn University has been sold.

A press release from the university said the sale of the complex to the neighboring Mill Creek Village Apartments was completed late last month. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Penndel has served us well,” said University President Dr. Todd Williams in emails to employees and students on Thursday. “There are some aspects of it we will miss, and I am sure some students and alumni will experience bittersweet emotions at the news of this sale. However, I see the sovereign hand of God in this transaction. He has opened a door for us to exercise good stewardship and advance the work of the University.”

The university said they purchased the complex, then known as the Concorde Apartments, in 1979 due to its proximity to the campus. In the years since, Cairn University has transitioned to an on-campus model of housing. In the 1990s, five on-campus dorm buildings were constructed and a former assisted-living facility in Langhorne Manor was purchased and converted into living spaces for students.

“Continued concerns with the Penndel facility included the costs of a shuttle service and maintenance of the aging buildings, as well as limited parking; employees and the board continued to express the desirability of the efficiency and energy brought to campus culture through newly constructed on-campus housing,” Cairn University officials said in a press release.

The money obtained from the complex sale will be used for future construction of dorms at Cairn University, the statement said.

Mill Creek Village Apartments plans to renovate the Penndel dorms and add to the facility.
