A Neshaminy School District official and several sources in the transportation department have confirmed to LevittownNow.com that the bus driver who walked off the job in the middle of a route last week was a contractor.

Superintendent Joseph Jones said Tuesday evening that the bus driver who abruptly quit and walked away from a bus with less than a dozen students on board in Lower Southampton after a traffic stop worked for transportation contractor Student Transportation of America (STA.)

Neshaminy officials have met with officials from STA to discuss the incident.

“This was a unique circumstance,” Jones said. “This didn’t have to do with management or anything like that.”

The driver walked away from the bus and quit last Friday morning after an officer cited the STA employee after they allegedly drive through a stop sign on Central Avenue, Lower Southampton police Lt. Ted Krimmel said.

A police officer stayed with the children on the bus until another bus was dispatched to take them to their scheduled stop.

Neshaminy spokesperson Chris Stanley last week confirmed that the students were never left alone during the incident.

STA runs less than half the district’s bus routes and was hired in the past few years to supplement Neshaminy’s transportation staff.
