Sixth grade will be moving from the Bristol Township School District’s three elementary schools to the the two middle schools starting next school year.
The school board voted to approve the change during Monday evening’s meeting. The plan will have current fifth-graders move to the two middle schools – Neil A. Armstrong on Wistar Road or Franklin D. Roosevelt on Veterans Highway (Route 413) – when classes commence for the 2017-2018 school year.

Superintendent Dr. Melanie Gehrens explained that the district will be making some minor upgrades to Armstrong and Roosevelt. Most of the work will include converting former classrooms back to their original use.

The initial upgrades to the two buildings will total about $50,000, district business manager Josh Sweigard said.
Geherns said the district has intended to implement the move after it consolidated from nine elementary schools to the three new, bigger buildings. The plan was previously discussed several times when Dr. Sam Lee was superintendent.

The elementary schools are now filled at or near their 1,300-student capacity. Geherns said the problem will be alleviated by the move.
The long-term goal for the district is still to close FDR and move that middle school to the closed Ben Franklin School on Mill Creek Road. The district will likely move forward with that plan once administration and transportation moves to the former Clara Barton Elementary School.
