A police officer and a suspected drunk driver were taken to the hospital after the suspected intoxicated driver crashed into a patrol car Tuesday night.

Lt. Pete Feeney said two Middletown officers were sitting with a disabled vehicle on southbound Route 1 south of I-95 when the crash happened.

“As they were getting in their cars to leave after the tow removed the disabled auto, a vehicle traveling southbound drifted onto the shoulder of the road and struck the back of one of patrol cars,” Feeney said.

An officer and the suspected drunk driver were taken to St. Mary Medical Center for treatment for minor injuries, Feeney said. He added that both were released from the hospital.

The driver who struck the police car was suspected of being under the influence or alcohol and will be charged.
