Police in Falls Township and Middletown are warning residents about scam calls.

The calls are reportedly being placed from the 844 area code and involve threats to shut off electric service if money isn’t paid. Falls police said the callers have Indian accents.

Middletown residents reported to investigators that the fake PECO callers encouraged them to buy gift cards to cover their alleged debt to the utility company. In Falls, callers were told they could pay via a money transfer service.

PECO officials will not request money via gift cards or money transfer service, police said.

Falls police called the scam caller’s number back and were sent to an automated menu that purports to be PECO.
