The event, titled โ€œPrescription for Danger,โ€ will be held on October 20 at 7 p.m. in Keller Hall at Pennsbury High School West and is open to parents and the public at no charge.

This event features a panel of experts, including speakers from the Bucks County Drug and Alcohol Commission, Inc., The office of the Bucks County District Attorney, local drug and alcohol treatment providers, and persons directly affected by opiate addiction. ย Members of the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions. ย Additional information and literature will be available and the event will be livestreamed.

Tim Philpot, Project Director for the Pennsbury LYFT says, โ€œOverdoses, primarily from heroin, have rapidly increased in our communities in the last several years. ย We know that a link has been established between the legitimate use of some medications and addiction to heroin and opiates. The goal of this event is to make sure that parents and families understand these hidden dangers, so they can protect themselves and their children.โ€

According to the National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA), nearly half of young people who inject heroin surveyed in three recent studies reported abusing prescription opioids before starting to use heroin. ย Other studies found that people who misused pain relieving medications were 19 times more likely to progress to heroin use than people who did not. ย Being aware of this connection means that individuals can make informed choices about taking prescription pain medications.
