In March, Harry S. Truman High School Social Studies Teacher Dr. Noriko Shiota led a group of students on an eight-day trip to Japan to promote deeper understanding and appreciation of Japanese history and culture. The group visited five cities: Tokyo, Hakone, Nara, Kyoto and Osaka.

According to Dr. Shiota, the experience provided students with interesting opportunities to learn about Japanโ€™s past and traditions and to experience first-hand the lifestyle of the people who live there. The exposure has prompted the travelers to evaluate their own culture and experiences differently.

The 6,900 mile journey offered an unforgettable itinerary. The group visited Tokyoโ€™s oldest temple–Sensoji in Asakusa–built in 645 CE, viewed Mount Fuji, Japanโ€™s tallest peak, travelled to Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen bullet train, toured Kyoto and saw Sanjusangendo, known for its 1001 life-sized wooden statues ofย  Kannon, goddess of mercy.

The trip, which was partly funded through the groupโ€™s fundraising efforts, was a rewarding experience for all who participated.
