Waste Management has received Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection approval for a new municipal waste landfill in Falls Township.

The new permit will allow the new Fairless Landfill, which is situated on a portion of the former US Steel Fairless Works property, to begin operating at the site. The permit will be valid for the next 10 years.

State DEP officials noted that no new waste streams have been added and hazardous waste materials will not be accepted at the new facility.

“As with all permit applications, DEP waste program staff conducted a thorough review of all information submitted by Waste Management”, said DEP Southeast Regional Director Cosmo Servidio. “From a volume standpoint, there won’t be an increased amount of waste coming to the local community.”

Currently, Waste Management owns and operates the GROWS North Landfill in Falls and Tullytown Landfill, which is set to close in 2017. The Waste Management landfills currently handle 18,333 tons of waste per day.

In 2015, Falls officials said they currently receive $4.95 per a one ton load from the Tullytown Landfill and $5.95 per one ton load at the ROWS North Landfill. They added the new Fairless Landfill would see $6.25 per ton in the first three to five years of use and $6.50 per ton thereafter.

A class-action lawsuit against Waste Management over the Tullytown Landfill ended earlier this year with the waste company agreeing to pay $2 million to settle.
