First responders from multiple agencies braved biting cold to evacuate residents and battle flames at a Middletown apartment complex.
Firefighters and police quickly arrived to the Foxwood Manor Apartments Building 4 off Veterans Highway in Middletown’s Levittown section around 5:25 a.m. Saturday. The first officials on the scene jumped into action and began clearing residents from the building that had flames shooting from it.

Fire Marshal Jim McGuire said firefighters’ quick actions likely saved the whole building from being destroyed by fire. In total, 16 apartments were damaged, with four being severely damaged.
One person suffered smoke inhalation and was transported by medics to an area hospital.
The fire that started in one apartment caused the most serious damage to the units above and to the side. Other apartments in the building suffered water and smoke damage, McGuire said.

The residents of the apartment where the fire occurred waited before calling 9-1-1 in an attempt to extinguish the flames themselves, officials said.
The cause and exact location of the fire’s origins remained under investigation as of 8 a.m.
