When police cars and fire trucks rolled up to the scene of Tuesday evening’s violent crash on Route 13 in Bristol Borough, a Chevrolet Suburban SUV sat mangled with two injured people inside.

Volunteer firefighters worked for about 50 minutes to free the driver of the SUV that slammed into the rear of a large truck in the area of Fourth Avenue. The SUV’s passenger was removed quickly and taken by ambulance. Firefighters used mechanical tools and their training to free the two men who needed medical assistance.

The details on the rescue came Thursday from police Sgt. Pete Faight, who identified the critically injured driver as Matthew Morales of Tullytown and the passenger as Tyler Smith of Bristol Borough. Smith remains at Aria Health’s Torresdale campus in stable condition.

Faight said it appeared Morales didn’t brake before slamming the SUV into the rear of the truck which had just emptied a load of dry mix at a nearby facility. The truck driver, who was unhurt, told police he was just about to take his foot off the brake to move with traffic that had just sat through a red light when the SUV slammed into the truck.

Police are currently looking at surveillance video from a nearby business to see if it yields any clues.
