Levittown-Raised Philadelphia International Airport CEO Stepping Down

The Levittown-raised CEO of the 12th busiest airport in the United States is retiring.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter announced Monday that Philadelphia International Airport CEO Mark Gale is retiring after 28 working for the city-owned airport. He has served at CEO since 2009 and also oversees Northeast Philadelphia Airport.

โ€œI have thoroughly enjoyed my years at the Airport, especially the last seven when the leadership team has worked together to improve air service and to enhance passengersโ€™ travel experience,โ€ Gale said. โ€œI thank Mayor Nutter for the opportunity he gave me to lead this great organization and I thank all our employees dedicated to serving the Airportโ€™s customers. Now, Iโ€™m looking forward to the next phase of my life, both personally and professionally.โ€

Under Gale’s watch, the airport has worked toward a planned multi-billion dollar modernization and expansion program and added five new airline carriers.

A short biography of Gale, as provided by Philadelphia officials:

Gale began his career at the Airport in 1985 as an intern. After graduation, he returned to the Airport in early 1989 and has held a variety of positions during his tenure. From 1996 to 2000, he served as the Airportโ€™s Operations Manager. From 2000 until his appointment as CEO in 2009, he served as Deputy Director of Aviation for Operations and Facilities and led a group of managers directing the day-to-day critical airport functions, including all airport operations, and maintenance, safety/security, information technology, engineering design and construction. Gale will retire at the beginning of January.

Gale holds a Bachelorโ€™s degree in Aeronautical Studies from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He is an accredited member in the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and also serves on AAAEโ€™s Board of Directors, the Board of Directors for Airports Council International โ€“ North America, the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the U.S. Travel Association.

Gale, a current city resident, is expected to retire in early January.
