Republican Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-8) stood before a group of seventh-grade students at Maple Point Middle School in Middletown Tuesday afternoon to discuss his job, explain the basic principals of a constitutional republic and take questions.
Fitzpatrick, a Levittown resident, also explained to students why he opted not to run for reelection in 2016. He said he felt his four terms in the House of Representatives were enough, even telling the students he believed in term limits for members of congress.

The students focused their attention oN the congressman as he explained to them how the Constitution and Declaration of Independence were signed just a short distance away in Philadelphia more than 200 years ago. The seventh-graders also marveled when Fitzpatrick noted Declaration of Independence of signer and future president James Monroe was just 18 years old when he signed the document.

The students learned about the three branches of government and their roles.
“Not everybody agrees but compromise is important,” Fitzpatrick said of the law making process.

The congressman, in response to a question asked by a student, explained the importance of listening to constituents and doing his best to represent all 700,000 of them.
On Thursday, former Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham will be speaking to eighth-grade students as part of their study of government.
