The inaugural Family Fishing Day at Silver Lake Nature Center in Bristol surpassed organizers attendance expectations.
The event, a partnership between the Delaware River Fisher’s Association and Silver Lake Nature Center, focused on teaching the basics of fishing to anyone interested. The event was free for all attendees, and the first 25 kids to register received free fishing rods and reels.

The rods were donated to the Delaware River Fisher’s Association by Cabela’s, for distribution at events like the free fishing day.
According to PattiAnn Cutter Lynn of the Silver Lake Nature Center, 109 participants signed up, even though the cap for participation was supposed to be 75 people.
Scott McDonough, president of the Delaware River Fishing Association, helped teach participants about rigging rods and about different types of knots to use while fishing.

At the end of the instructional stations, participants actually fished and caught blue gills from the Silver Lake Nature center. The day concluded with a raffle for the remaining fishing rods.
The weather was perfect for fishing, according to the members of the fishing association that helped put on the event.

“The day went well. It was better than I expected,” said Matt Kicinski, of the Delaware River Fishing Association. He added Saturday was one of the best times the fishing club has done something like the free fishing day.
