Blonder’s Appliances Celebrates 30 Years In Business

Blonder’s Discount Appliance Center in Levittown is proudly celebrating 30 years in business.

The longtime local business, which stakes its reputation on family-like atmosphere and deals, was started by Frank Blonder, who opened his first store on New Falls Road by Wistar Road in 1985. The business is now operated by Frank Blonder’s son Mark and his wife Lisa.

Bucks County Technical High School-educated Frank Blonder said he worked since high school for a local appliance shop – a tour in the United States Army Signal Corps was peppered in between – before getting the opportunity to open his own family-run shop in Levittown.

After expanding to two storefronts at the New Falls Road shopping center, he found it time to look for a new location that was also in the heart of the community. In 1991, Blonder’s moved into their current location at 3967 Veteran Highway in Levittown, which was formerly a furniture store.

“This location is the size we wanted in the town we wanted to be in,” Mark Blonder said.

Customers who visit the tidy store are almost immediately greeted by one of the Blonders or one of their seven employees. From there, the customers can browse the store’s large selection of appliances and purchase the items right on the spot.

“Our slogan used to be: ‘join the Blonder’s family of satisfied customers,’” Mark Blonder explained,” and I think that is really true. There is a family atmosphere.”

Both Frank and Mark Blonder agree that its their selection, prices and respect for customers that continues to make their business a local staple.

“I think we have a lot more knowledge than those big box stores,” Frank Blonder said.

Aside from just recommending, selling and delivering appliances, Blonder’s staff can also make minor repairs or refer customers to a quality local technician.

“The older customers remember what real service is like,” he said. “The younger people don’t always know.”

Mark Blonder said he finds a lot of younger customers aren’t accustomed to the high-level of service Blonder’s customers receive. He added that once the younger customers come in the door they become customers and appreciate the level service.

Through a cooperative purchasing agreement, Blonder’s is able to keep their prices and stock competitive with the larger chain stores. More than 700 smaller appliance shops work together to purchase merchandise, which helps keep prices at their Levittown store low.

Despite changes in the market and community, Blonder’s has remained a tentpole business in the area.

“We’ve seen a lot of bigger stores come and go but we’re still here.”
