An e-waste collection is scheduled to be held at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Middle School on Veteran’s Highway on March 28.

The collection gives residents a safe and legal way to dispose of unwanted electronic items. It is illegal to get rid of e-waste improperly, such as through conventional trash collection and recycling. E-waste contains hazardous materials and chemicals, making proper disposal key for them, according to organizers.

A number of household items will be accepted during the collection, including “cellphones, computers, laptops, televisions, radios, wires, cables, CDs, video games, and other household electronics.” According to the press release, items that use freon, including refrigerators and air conditioners will not be accepted.

Changes in laws and collection practices pushed the county to end the collection program that was previously in place. “The county is pleased to offer this collection event for residents through a partnership with the F.D.R. middle school and E-Waste Experts, Inc.” reads the press release.

The collection event will run between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 28.
