Regional rail commuters in Lower Bucks County might have noticed an increased police presence on Wednesday morning.

The stepped up patrols were part of the nationwide exercise called Operation RAILSAFE, which stands for Regional Alliance Including Local, State and Federal Efforts. Locally, Middletown, Lower Makefield and Yardley police joined the SEPTA Transit Police Department in the effort.

From Middletown police:

During Operation Rail Safe today, Middletown Township officers deployed at the Woodbourne SEPTA station during morining rush hour. Officers spoke to waiting train passengers on the platform, and when trains arrived, officers conducted perimeter checks of the train, and boarded the train to conduct a security check and to speak to passengers and the train conductor about Operation Rail Safe. The process took only a few minutes and did not delay the trains.

The patrols came on the 11th anniversary of deadly train bombings in Spain. Those bombings were carried out by terrorists and killed nearly 200 people.

If you see suspicious activity in the area of local transit systems, you can call 9-1-1 or SEPTA police at 215-580-8111.
