Charges have been filed against a man who police say was driving under the influence when he struck a 10-year-old boy in December.
According to Bristol Township police, the serious crash occurred on the 1500 block of Lakeland Avenue on December 22, when the boy, in an attempt to catch up with his friends, ran into the street. The boy, who was transported to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) was seriously injured in the crash.

Now over two months later, police say Paul Rice, 54, the driver of the Dodge Ram pickup that struck the boy, was operating the vehicle with a BAC of .197, more than double the state’s legal limit of .08.
According to police, they noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Rice’s breath at the scene of the accident. Rice, who admitted to drinking before the accident, admitted later in police custody to drinking even more.
Police noted in the probable cause affidavit that Rice’s actions were not the primary cause of the accident and that hitting the boy was “unavoidable.”
