The Bristol Township School District will be holding public hearings next week for the proposed permanent closure of six elementary school buildings.
The district and school board will hold public hearings March 2 at the Benjamin Franklin School on Mill Creek Road on the closure of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Clara Barton, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, James Buchanan and John Fitch elementary schools. The hearings will be held back-to-back beginning at 6 p.m.

According to state law, the district has to hold the hearings to get public testimony and present their plan. A record of the meeting will be sent to Harrisburg before the school district can make any determination to officially close schools.

Closing hearings for the three schools where new buildings will be placed had their closing hearings previous to work at the sites starting. The 1,300-student schools at the sites of Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School on Mill Creek Road and James Buchanan Elementary School on Haines Road are expected to open in September. The new building at the Mary Devine Elementary School site in Croydon is expected to open in September 2016.
The new state-of-the-art schools are expected to save the cash-strapped district more than $1 million a year once the nine former elementary schools are closed.

The project is currently expected to cost over $120 million.
