A. First and foremost only use registered movers like Sunrise Moving. Ask for recommendations from neighbors, friends, and relatives regarding movers.
Since you are moving out of state, make sure the mover you select has been assigned a United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) number and is registered with Federal Motor Carrier Safety administration (FMCSA). For moves within a State, requirements vary. Check with the Public Utility Commission (PUC) office to make sure the mover has the proper level of insurance and is licensed. Then, get a written estimate, based on an actual inspection of your household, from several movers. It is advised that your estimate be based on approximate weight and not volume. Estimates given based on volume tend to create more discrepancies and ultimately over charges to the consumer. Keep in mind that you have a right to be present each time your shipment is weighed.

The following documents should also be provided to you by the mover you choose; an Order for Service (a list of all the services the mover will provide), Bill of Lading (contract between you and the mover), and an inventory list/receipt showing each item to be moved and its condition. Look this over carefully and make sure that you agree with your household goods “condition” before signing.
Next, do your homework. Read “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move,” a booklet from the Federal government that your mover is required to give you if you are moving from one State to another.
