On October 8, 2014, Project Lead The Way (PLTW) engineering students took a field trip to learn more about the field of engineering. Under the guidance of Harry S. Truman High School’s PLTW Engineering Instructor, Cosmo D. DiLiegro, students visited the construction in progress at Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School.

The class, which recently completed a surveying unit in topographical surveying, profile and grading, collected soil samples for gradation, plastic limit and classification testing. Students also examined onsite wall construction, site grading, utilities and retention basins.

In 2009, the District joined forces with PLTW, a non-profit organization that develops hand-on, project-based STEM curricula to prepare students for the global economy. Introduction to Engineering Design was the first course offered at the high school. Over the next five years, additional engineering courses were added. Students can now choose from four engineering courses, with the potential for earning 12 college credits while in high school that can be applied to secondary institutions that partner with PLTW. The high school courses are sequenced and each course builds upon the next.

DiLiegro said, “The field trip allowed students to apply the information they are learning in the classroom. Experiential learning reinforces the skills and concepts we cover in class and facilitates a deeper understanding.”
