The Girl Scouts in essence are about teaching girls skills, such as leadership, as they grow from children to the young women. From there the women can then go on to becoming our leaders of tomorrow.
The three Girl Scouts were honored for their creation of a sensory garden designed to enhance the Silver Lake Nature Center experience for kids who live with autism related challenges.

The trio decided on a sensory garden because autism effects a number of kids they know in the community, troop leader Erica Schbaert said.
The girls picked the sensory themed project to enhance and help those with the challenge, she said.
The girls put in 20 hours of hands-on work in developing the garden under the guidance of a project coordinator Kim Connor, Girl Scout officials said.

Schbaert, a long time leader of troop 2153, said the trio of girls are best friends outside and inside the troop so it was natural for the to work on this achieving this distinction together. It’s all apart of how the Girl Scouts mentor girls towards defining their sense of self and community, Schbaert said.

The trio prior to earning the Bronze Award began what’s referred to as aย leadership journey, in which they choose an area of focus to work on. The trio chose to help the community, Schbaert said. The girls were a part of the Bristol Borough Cleanup Day and recruited volunteers to help in creating the sensory garden.
The trio of junior scouts will be coming back to the nature center to maintain the garden as part of their ongoing process of becoming integral parts of the community.
After the ceremony, snacks and refreshments were offered. In the background the girls giggled, did cart wheels, and activities girls when they’re young.
