Social Security Rally Held Outside Congressman’s Office


Supporters of Democratic congressional candidate Kevin Strouse gathered outside of incumbent Republican Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick’s Middletown offices on Thursday to protest his voting record on social security.

โ€œWe’re here because we would like to save social security, medicare and medicaid,โ€ constituent Eleanor Gurriero said outside Fitzpatrick’s 8th District office. โ€œWe want it as it is. Don’t change it.โ€

Lynda Mintz, of Bensalem said she supports Strouse and came out “โ€œbecause social security is under attack by the right wing, and he (Fitzpatrick) is one of them.โ€

โ€œHe is not a supporter of social security,โ€ Mintz said.

Strouse, who was in attendance along with Democratic State Senate Candidate Steve Cickay, explained that the date of this particular protest was chosen for a very specific reason.

“We wanted to acknowledge and commemorate the occasion of social security being signed into law,โ€ Strouse explained to the crowd of his supporters, many in campaign shirts.

During speeches given by Strouse and various supporters, the crowd showed their enthusiasm and support.

โ€œThey call it welfare,โ€ Strouse said, referring to republicans. He added that the idea to raise the age of social security is “wrong.โ€

Sam Bolstein, campaign coordinator for Fitzpatrick, responded to Strouse’s rally.

โ€œMike Fitzpatrick believes Social Security is an essential program and is the only candidate who has voted to protect and strengthen it,โ€ he said.
