Car Hits Turnpike Toll Booth

A car was mangled Monday evening when it struck the Pennsylvania Turnpike toll plaza in Bristol Township.

The driver was freed by firefighters and transported to the hospital with minor injuries, Edgely Fire Company Deputy Chief Joe Cavanaugh said.

The vehicle struck the westbound portion of the toll plaza around 5:20 p.m. The car, which was reported to be traveling eastbound, was facing toward New Jersey and in the westbound lanes when it hit the concrete safety barrier and flipped. It is unclear as of press time why the car was traveling the wrong direction.

Cavanaugh said the car landed between the booth and the concrete safety barrier, just missing the booth that held a worker.

Firefighters from Edgely, Levittown No. 2 and Newport fire companies responded to the scene and removed the roof of the car.

The Turnpike was backed up following the nasty-looking wreck.
