Next, the township board of supervisors narrowed the field to five finalist, who participated in an assessment two weeks ago, the township manager said.

The board of supervisors will meet with search consultants Safe City Solutions during the week of July 14 and select the final two to three candidates. From there, the finalist will interview before the board and Teoli Kuhls.

The township manager said the search for a new chief is both internal and external.

The 54-officer department that serves on of the state’s 19th largest municipality is currently being led by Lt. Ken Mellus and Lt. John Michniewicz.

Kane worked in law enforcement for the past 35 years. Kane was a lieutenant in the township before his promotion to chief and led the department to state accreditation in 2008. Kane also initiated and ran the township’s D.A.R.E program for several years.  He became police chief in 2010.

In the last decade, the township had a public safety director instead of a police chief.
