The morning after a car slammed into the IHOP in Fairless Hills, the restaurant was open and a group of residents and Falls Township police officials met for the town’s first ever “Coffee with a Cop” event.

While the turnout wasn’t huge, the roughly half-dozen community members were able to meet police officials who keep the community safe last Thursday.

“I think it’s great you get to meet the cops you see around the township,” Falls resident and hospital nurse Susan Zemany said.
At one point, a man shared stories with the gathered police officers as the others in attendance sipped coffee and enjoyed breakfast.
Rebecca Purcell of Falls found it formative and said she was happy the police were there for the community.

Getting out and meeting members of the community helps build good relations with police, Lt. Don Airey said.
Staff at the popular eatery in the Oxford Point Shopping Center worked after the Thursday afternoon accident to ready the IHOP for Friday morning’s breakfast rush and “Coffee with a Cop” event.

General Manager and Owner Hanna Keryakous said he appreciates the police coming in and thanks the staff and contractors who fixed the hole in his business.
The “Coffee with a Cop” program is encouraged by the U.S. Department of Justice. Nearby, Northampton Township police take part in the initiative meant to build relations between the community and those that protect them.
“‘Coffee with a Cop’ is currently strengthening community and police relations and enhancing officer safety in over 250 cities, towns and campuses in 41 states,” according to the federal justice department website.
