The Pennsbury School District says they lose roughly $70,000 a year on a pool they don’t use for curriculum at a Lower Makefield middle school. It’s a loss several members of the school board want to stop.
At a recent board meeting and a recent town hall meeting in Falls, Pennsbury School Board President Jaqui Redner said closing the pool inside Pennwood Middle School on Makefield Road would save the district money that could be used for education or school renovations.

District Business Manager Dan Rogers presented information to officials recently that showed the pool, which is used by several community groups, costs about $85,000 a year. The district makes back around $15,000, but their burdened with the remaining costs.
Redner said it’s not the district’s job to fund a community pool that is not used for educational program or school-backed swim meets.
Officials have noted the ventilation system, door frames and pump need to be replaced or fix. The upgrades are expected to cost a large sum of money. Redner thinks the district could better use those funds for educational programs.

Superintendent Dr. Kevin McHugh said the community pool business is not the one the district is interested it.
With options weighed, district officials have said the pool is “too costly to generate a revenue.”

The board is expected to vote on the whether or not to close the pool at this Thursday’s board meeting.
