Rita’s Tradition of Free Water Ice Welcomes Spring

It’s a Lower Bucks County tradition. Free water ice from Rita’s to mark the first day of spring.

All Rita’s Italian Ice locations will be offering free Italian ice cups to help welcome spring on Thursday, March 20 from noon to 9 p.m.

It’s a tradition the company said they have been taking part in for 22 years. Rita’s gave away 1.2 million cups of their famous water ice on the first day of spring in 2012, according to the Bensalem-based company.

“We are excited to celebrate our 22nd annual First Day of Spring Free Ice Giveaway and welcome our Guests to enjoy their first taste of spring on us,” Jeff Moody, Rita’s chief executive officer, said.

In accordance with the 21st Century, Rita’s is holding contests on social media. Here’s more from the company:

Fans won’t want to miss Rita’s First Day of Spring Photo Contest!  Capture your First Taste of Spring at Rita’s and tag your photos with #ritasfirstdayofspring on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram  beginning March 20th through March 23rd, 2014. All First Day of Spring photo entries will be judged on creativity, originality and spirit.  One Grand Prize Winner will receive FREE Rita’s Ice for a Year, two Runner-ups will receive a special Rita’s Spring Picnic Pack, and Honorable Mentions will receive gift vouchers from Printstagram.  Winners will be announced on March 27th.

Rita’s will also host a First Day of Spring Great State Race on Twitter!  All day, on the First Day of Spring, fans “Tweet your Treat” and the state you are located in for a chance to win a Rita’s $22 Gift Card! (Example: #RitasNJ #gelati #ritasSTARBURSTcherryice) Thursday, March 20th, 2014. One lucky fan will be chosen from each state Rita’s is located!

Former Philadelphia firefighter Bob Tumolo started the chain in Bensalem in 1984. Since then, the company has been sold and expanded with stores across the globe.
