Forecasters are expecting some of the most intense cold in decades to hit the area over the coming days.

Residents awoke on Monday to melting snow and a high of nearly 60 degrees, the National Weather Service says that will be short lived. The overnight temperature without the wind chill is predicted to be 10 degrees. With the wind chill, that number could fall several degrees below zero.

Wind gusts of 25 MPH to 35 MPH from the northwest are expected Monday also. Higher winds of 30 MPH to 40 MPH are expected into Tuesday morning. By Tuesday afternoon, forecasters say the wind will gradually die down. A wind chill advisory was issued for Lower Bucks County and continues through Wednesday.

Bucks County officials have declared a Code Blue starting Monday at 6 p.m. and going until Thursday at 6 a.m.

For Lower Bucks residents in need of shelter: Woodside Presbyterian Church is the Code Blue shelter site for  January. The shelter is located at 1667 Edgewood Road Yardley, PA 19067. Doors open at 9 p.m. For those needing transportation to the site click here for the transport schedule. Guests will be welcomed  into the code blue on-call site beginning at 9 a.m. as staffing permits.

Cold weather means wet roadways could become slippery as temperatures rapidly fall. The low temperatures also  render road salt less effective.

County Emergency Management Director Scott Forster and Health Director Dr. David Damsker are advising all residents to be aware of the severe anticipated weather conditions. Checks on elderly neighbors during this cold snap are encouraged. Also, caution should be taken with pets during the extremely cold weather.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing on Thursday and remain seasonable into next week.
