Borough Council Set to Vote on Tax Raise Monday Night

Bristol Borough ย Council is expected to vote Monday night to raise taxes on ย borough residents ย for first time ย in seven years tย due to a shortfall of about $600,000 ย in poor performing investments.

The tax, proposed by council, amounts to a $80 per household uptick ย for each family.

A gain of ย $600,000 that was projected earlier this year but, according to council officials. The staggering economy and 1 percent interest rate on borough’s investments are to blame for the poor performance.ย Council considered a number ย of ideas while they met to over several budget planning sessions to come up with a balanced budget, including tapping into the ย general fund.

Council’s preliminary budget proposed a 5-mill increase for the general fund and an additional 1.75 mills for the fire fund โ€“ a total of 6.75 mills, which will help balance the $12-million budget for 2014.
