A regulated shotgun deer hunt will be held at Tyler State Park on Wednesday.

“Due to the natural resource impacts and increased numbers of white-tailed deer in Tyler State Park and in an effort to reduce problems created by this condition, a regulated deer hunt will be conducted,” according to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The park’s large deer herd is said to damage plant life and cause numerous motor vehicles crashes.

The sprawling park, which sits in both Newtown and Northampton townships, will be closed to all visitors. Park officials said the ” temporary inconvenience” will only last for one day.

The hunt of antlered and antlerless deer is open roughly 150 hunters who have special hunting permits from state officials.

Hunters enter the park, which will be heavily patrolled by state park rangers and other law enforcement, in early morning hours on Wednesday. Protesters usually gather at the main entrance to the park on the Newtown Bypass to protest the annual hunt.

Shotgun blasts can be heard cracking the cold morning air surrounding the park during the hunt.

An archery deer hunt is expected to be held at the park at the end of the year and into early 2014.
