School Closing Hearing Set for Mary Devine Elementary School

The Bristol Township School District will be holding an important hearing for residents in early December.

The required Act 34 public hearing to close Mary Devine Elementary School in Croydon has been announced by the district. The hearing will take place at Thursday, December 5 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Benjamin Franklin School on Mill Creek Road in Levittown.

Act 34 hearings will allow the district to outline the plans to close the current nine elementary schools and replace them with at least two new ones, each costing $41 million.

Public comment will be accepted and entered into the record during the meeting. Superintendent Dr. Samuel Lee said recently the district and the new school planning team will present information similar to what was presented at community meetings on the proposed project earlier this year.

The Act 34 hearings for James Buchanan Elementary School on Haines Road and the other for Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School on Mill Creek Road in Levittown in October were attended by no more than 15 residents.

The hearings are required of any district before embarking on a large school closing, reconstruction or expansion project.
