The driver of a Pennsbury School District bus that crashed into a wooded embankment in Middletown on Friday afternoon suffered a medical emergency in the moments leading up the crash, authorities say.

According to state police, the 77-year-old Morrisville man driving the bus blacked out on the highway in the area of the Durham Road overpass. An accident report says the driver suffered a “diabetic condition.”

No one aside from the driver was on board, police said.

The accident happened around 1:40 p.m. and only involved the bus. Traffic delays on southbound I-95 were reported as first respondents arrived to the scene.

The bus driver was taken to St. Mary Medical Center by ambulance for treatment.

A bus accident several miles up the highway took place in July. Several students were taken to the hospital following that crash, which involved a chartered bus.
