On October 24th, BCIT accounting students traveled to Temple University to benefit from the PICPA (Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants) Accounting Career Day.ย This was a free program offered to students for the purpose of learning more about diverse career opportunities in the accounting profession, and to discover the advantages of the CPA designation, as well as gain exposure to a college environment.ย Students received valuable information from senior Temple accounting students and interacted with professionals working in the field who shared life experiences and current career opportunities.
On October 30th, BCIT Finance and Investment students participated in the TruMark Reality Fair.ย This was a simulated experience where students addressed budgeting issues and dilemmas.ย Each student was asked in advance to research the career of his/her choice.ย Upon entering the conference, students were given their monthly salaries, respective deductions for taxes, and a net pay figure. Students visited booths monitored by professionals to obtain transportation, insurance, housing, furniture, clothing, cell phones, cable, food, entertainment, etc. Savings goals, credit card bills and student loans were also considered in the budgeting experience.ย The student results were evaluated by financial consultants for approval or re-entry into the fair to make needed budget adjustments.
This experience allowed students to feel the pressure of making financial decisions, to see the need for prioritized spending and to realize the importance of having sufficient income and savings.
