UPDATED: Deadly Crash Caused by Wrong-Way Driver

Update: Tuesday, 6:34 p.m.:

A retired Philadelphia police officer was killed Tuesday afternoon when he drove against traffic on Route 13 in the area of the Levittown Parkway in Tullytown.

The man’s name has not yet been released, but Tullytown Chief of Police Daniel Doyle told LevittownNow.com the man was 80 years old and a Philadelphia resident.

The driver of the maroon Nissan SUV that was struck head-on was transported to St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown with non-life-threatening injuries following the nasty two-car crash. The injured victim is not a Levittown-area resident.

The chief said preliminary findings revealed the blue sedan was driving the wrong way when the crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Doyle added the accident investigation is ongoing and the intersection will be closed for several hours. Bristol Township accident investigators are assisting Tullytown officers.

Traffic following the nasty crash was gridlocked on Route 13, Levittown Parkway and Main Street in the area.

Tullytown and several other fire companies responded to the accident.

Witnesses to the accident are asked to call Tullytown police at  215-945-0999.

Traffic is a jammed throughout the lower end of the Levittown area after an multi-car accident with a fatality happened Tuesday afternoon.

Details are scarce as of 4:15, but police have said one person was killed in the wreck. The body was covered by a red tarp and situated on the side of the blue car.

At least two to three cars were involved. A purple Nissan SUV and an older blue sedan were mangled in a head-on position.

Firefighters, medics and police responded to the crash around 3:30 p.m. There are witness reports at least one person was taken by ambulance and attempts to assist the fatality were unsuccessful.

The crash happened in the northbound lanes of Route 13.

“‘Looks like they got off at Tullytown exit and went wrong way down 13 towards the Parkway,” witness Joshua Budion said via social media.

Vehicle traffic on Route 13, Levittown Parkway and Main Street was jammed as of 4:15 p.m. The delays extended from Tullytown into Bristol Township and Falls.
