It was the high rate of speed that attracted a state trooper’s attention to a Mercedes-Benz SUV heading toward New Jersey on the Pennsylvania Turnpike through Bensalem Township at around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday.
A traffic stop was initiated and the SUV, which was clocked as going over 110 MPH, pulled over just before the Delaware River Turnpike Bridge in Bristol Township, state police said in a written statement. A trooper reportedly walked to the front of his patrol vehicle and the SUV driver looked back and then speed off.

According to police, the multi-state pursuit reached speeds of 120 MPH and 100 MPH when the Mercedes used a shoulder as a travel lane during heavy traffic. The vehicle chase ended when the SUV crash on the Route 130 exit in Florence, N.J.
The driver, Maurice Nieves, 30, of York, jumped out of the SUV and fled on foot as the crashed vehicle began to burn, police report. A Pennsylvania trooper gave foot chase and used his taser on Nieves, according to a press release.
Nieves then broke free as the zaps from the taser dissipated and the trooper worked to place the man in handcuffs. The trooper then again had to chase Nieves onto the roadway, police said. They added the chase ended when Nieves became “winded” and surrendered.

New Jersey State Police took command on the accident scene and were able to determine that Nieves was intoxicated, authorities in Pennsylvania said.
Nieves was taken to a hospital in Mt. Holly and will be sent to a New Jersey jail on DUI charged until he can be arraigned on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, resisting arrest, DUI and other related offenses in Bristol Towsnhip.

A woman in the car was uninjured.
