The family was celebrating the Hindu observance of Diwali, also known as the Indian New Year, and was using sparklers, McGuire said.

The fire marshal told LevittownNow.com that Newtown firefighters were first to arrive and quickly went into action fighting the flames.

Diwali is a six-day celebration making the end of the old Indian year and the beginning of a new one.
