A story in the Bucks County Courier Times’ Thursday print edition says that John Bush, who is heading to trial for a standoff with police after he planned to kill his estranged wife, showed up drunk to county court on Wednesday.
The newspaper reports that “courthouse employees said they noticed the smell of alcohol wafting off him” and let officials know. The 66-year-old Bristol Township man was then placed into custody and sent to a prison cell to sober up.

His trial will resume Thursday morning in Doylestown.

According to police, Bush broke into his divorced wife’s home in the 800 block of Walsh Road in Middletown on May 29. He waited with a handgun inside, police said, as he planning to rape and kill her.
Bush’s wife, who is currently in the process of getting divorced from him, testified at his preliminary hearing that she got home from work and a neighbor told her he thought someone had broken into her home, she said. In the rear of the home, she said she noticed a broken window and then called 911.

Two officers went into the house with guns drawn and they said Bush’s wife told them she noticed her estranged husband’s hat and sunglasses on the table. Bush then called his wife’s nickname and she went outside.
A police officer testified at the hearing that Bush was sitting on a chair and holding a black handgun, held between both hands and pointing toward a wall. The police officer identified himself and asked the 66-year-old to drop the gun multiple times. He allegedly refused

The officer then testified that Bush pivoted in the chair and pointed the .45 caliber handgun towards him. He said he backed through the kitchen and to the front door where he once again asked Bush to drop the gun.
“How about I just kill myself?” Bush reportedly responded.

Local and state police arrived on the scene and began a nearly hour-long standoff in the quiet middle-class neighborhood. Sgt. Matthew Kroiss was able to make contact with Bush and the armed man agreed to surrender peacefully, police said.
Back at the police station, Bush was found to be wearing black satin bikini underwear following his arrest.

A detective testified that Bush asked him how he could be charged with attempted rape if the target was his wife. Amoroso said he told him it was illegal.
A protection for abuse order was active against Bush and he was to have no contact with his wife, according to police.

The 66-year-old is facing charges of attempted murder, attempted rape, burglary and related offenses.
Bush was able to post 10 percent of $250,000 bail in July after spending more than a month in county lockup.
