An image of the US Steel Fairless Works facility in Falls Township in 1973. The photo shows the steel mill, which opened in December 1952 and brought thousands of jobs, many unionized. The facility on the Delaware River hit a peak employment of 8,000 in 1974. In the years since, the US Steel plant shrunk and only a fraction of the 8,000 employees work there. The company closed a large portion of the plant in 1991. Today, parts of the massive Fairless Works grounds are being used by other companies.
