Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story noted the boiler was for Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School. In fact, the boiler was rented for George Washington Elementary School. The mistake was on our part and we apologize for any confusion.

The Bristol Township School Board this week approved to rent a temporary boiler truck to help heat one of its schools from November to April.

The boiler contract will cost the district $38,985 just this school year. District records say “it would be cost prohibitive to repair the broken boiler” at George Washington Elementary School in Levittown.

Washington was built in 1958 and currently only one of the two boilers work. The district was forced to rent a temporary boiler in the 2012-2013 school year.

District officials said the $150,000 cost for a new boiler is out of question for the cash-strapped school district.

The broken boiler is one of several serious issues that plague the township’s nine aging elementary schools. In the past, the district had made statements to imply that other boilers is the district are aging and their life experience is limited.

The school board and administration are currently advocating a district-wide facilities overhaul would close the nine elementary schools and have three 1,300-students buildings constructed in their place. Emerson is one of the locations picked for the construction of a new school.
