The 15th annual Health Care’s Most Wired Survey lists St. Mary Medical Center among 289 hospitals and health networks nationwide that have earned the “Most Wired” distinction. Sponsored by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, the industry study measures the level of information technology being used in U.S. hospitals and health systems with the goal of improving care delivery and patient safety.
“We are proud to be recognized for the ways we incorporate technology into our everyday operations,” said Bonnie Buehler, Chief Information Officer at St. Mary. “The end goal is to use technology to improve the care we deliver and our patients’ experiences.”
Conducted between January 15 and March 15, the survey asked healthcare facilities about their information technology initiatives. Respondents completed 659 surveys representing 1,713 hospitals. Just 289 of those were named “Most Wired,” according to the magazine. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 (HITECH) mandates that hospitals and physicians adopt health information technology and use it in a meaningful way.

Healthcare facilities were evaluated on how well they use technology in four main areas: infrastructure, business and administration management, clinical quality and safety, and clinical integration.
According to the survey sponsors, the bottom line is to use today’s technological tools to deliver better healthcare. The majority of the Most Wired hospitals use technology to improve patient documentation, advance clinical-decision support, reduce the likelihood of medication errors, and to restore access to data quickly in the event of a disaster or power outage.
