James McCoy’s ex-girlfriend testified in court Tuesday morning that the 27-year-old Bristol man chocked her, pulled her by the hair and yelled at her, causing her to miss her grandfather’s funeral on June 27.

McCoy, dressed in a yellow prison jumpsuit, shook his head as his ex-girlfriend told the court about the nearly two-hour fight that started over some money she owned him.

After he came to the apartment where she lived with her father and step-mother, she told the court she informed McCoy she didn’t have the money, and he put his forearm over her throat. She added that he covered her mouth with his hand so her screams were muffled.

“We were just struggling and fighting,” she said. “I was trying to get him off of me.”

As the fight went on, she told McCoy she might as well go kill herself and that is when he offered to kill her, she said. He then grabbed what the young woman described as a serrated steak knife with a rounded tip and began poking her eyes. In her soft-spoken voice, she told the court that  he  ran the knife lightly over her wrist and caused a scratch.

McCoy Dragged  his ex-girlfriend by the hair,  when she got in the car of a family friend, the young man said.

During the two hours,  McCoy’s then-girlfriend screamed for help, got out of the house and then was let back in and the 27-year-old made a beer run after getting $30 from her, according to testimony.

The alleged nightmare situation  finally ended when the young woman’s step-mother arrived home and called police.

Christine Cregar, McCoy’s public defender, countered the prosecution’s case by asking why the woman didn’t just run away when she had the chance. She said the actions  of the  woman did not make sense.

Persecutors rebutted by saying  the woman suffered red marks and a scratch on her wrist.

Wagner decided to forward the charges up for trial simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, harassment, and related charges.

According to police sources, a routine home visit by a Bucks County Probation Officer, who became aware there were two warrants out for the suspect, led to his arrest.

Online court documents say McCoy pleaded guilty to an  involuntary manslaughter charge in  2006 and related offenses and was now serving two years of probation for those offenses.
